Hangeul: Korea’s Scientifically Designed Writing System

🔤 What is Hangeul?

Hangeul (한글) is the Korean writing system created in 1443 by King Sejong the Great and scholars of the Hall of Worthies. It was designed to be easy to learn, logical in structure, and capable of expressing all sounds of the Korean language.

Each consonant letter was shaped to mirror the position of the speech organs, while vowels are based on philosophical principles representing heaven (•), earth (ㅡ), and humanity (ㅣ). Hangeul is known as the most scientifically designed alphabet in the world.

📜 Historical Background

Before Hangeul, Koreans used Classical Chinese, which was difficult for commoners. King Sejong introduced Hangeul to promote literacy and communication across all social classes. The original name was "Hunminjeongeum" meaning "Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People."

🌍 Global Recognition

Hangeul is praised globally for its clarity and innovation. UNESCO awarded the King Sejong Literacy Prize in honor of the system, and Hangeul Day (October 9) is celebrated as a national holiday in South Korea.
